Aa A basaltic lava containing little gas and having low viscosity. Absolute age The actual time, in years, at which a geologic formation was laid down. See Radioactive dating. Absolute zero This is -273.15 degrees C, the lowest possible temperature. See also Kelvin temperature. Acid rain Rain with low pH, produced by combination of rain water with atmospheric pollutants, chiefly oxides of sulfur and nitrogen. Acid rain causes damage to the life of lakes and forests. Adhesion The attraction between a liquid and a solid. Water seeping into the ground, for example, forms a thin layer on the surface of the soil particles. See Subsurface water.
